Most people only see airports for a few hours.
They arrive, check in, board their flight, and continue their journey.
But for the people who work there, an airport is a place that never truly sleeps.
Working at Eindhoven Airport has shown me a completely different side of airport life.
No matter what time of the day or night it is, there is always something happening.
Some days I work from 4:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Other days my shift starts at 2:00 p.m. and finishes at midnight.
While many people are still asleep, I'm already at work preparing for the first travelers of the day. And when many people are getting ready for bed, I'm often helping the last passengers before heading home myself.
That is what makes airport life so unique.
The airport never really stops.
The early morning is one of my favorite moments.
Everything slowly comes to life.
The first travelers arrive with sleepy faces, suitcases rolling behind them, excited about their holidays, business trips, or family visits. You can almost feel the excitement in the air.
Later in the day, everything becomes busier.
Families, solo travelers, groups of friends, and business passengers all pass through the airport, each with their own destination and story.
One thing I enjoy most about working at an airport is watching people.
Every day I meet travelers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.
Some are smiling because they're going on holiday.
Some are nervous because they're flying for the first time.
Others are emotional because they're saying goodbye to someone they love.
Every person has their own story, and I think that's something really special.
Of course, working at an airport isn't always easy.
The shifts can be long.
Starting work at four o'clock in the morning means getting up while the rest of the city is still asleep.
Finishing at midnight means coming home when almost everyone else is already in bed.
It can be tiring, but it also teaches you discipline, flexibility, and how important teamwork really is.
An airport is like a giant machine.
Thousands of people work behind the scenes every single day to make sure travelers can continue their journeys safely and on time.
From cleaners and security officers to baggage handlers, shop employees, maintenance crews, pilots, cabin crew, and customer service staff—everyone plays an important role.
Without teamwork, an airport simply couldn't function.
One thing that still surprises me is how quickly an airport changes.
Within just a few hours, the atmosphere can be completely different.
A quiet morning can suddenly become incredibly busy.
Then, later in the evening, everything slowly starts to calm down again—only for the cycle to begin all over again a few hours later.
That is why I believe airports never truly sleep.
There is always another flight to prepare for.
Another traveler to help.
Another destination waiting.
Working at an airport has taught me to appreciate the people who keep everything running while most of the world is sleeping.
It has shown me that behind every flight are hundreds of hardworking people doing their very best.
And every time I walk through the airport, whether it's before sunrise or just before midnight, I'm reminded that somewhere in the world, someone is always beginning a new adventure.
That is one of the many reasons why I love working at an airport.
Because every single day is different.
And the airport never sleeps.
Love, Shavida
