How Long Can You Really Keep Food in the Freezer?

Have you ever found an old container of food at the back of your freezer and wondered if it was still safe to eat? You're definitely not the only one. Many people throw away frozen food simply because they're unsure how long it has been there.

The good news is that freezing is one of the best ways to preserve food.

When food is stored continuously at -18°C (0°F) or colder, harmful bacteria stop multiplying. This means that properly frozen food remains safe to eat for a very long time, provided it was fresh before freezing and has stayed frozen the entire time.

So why do frozen products have expiration or best-before dates?

These dates mainly refer to quality, not safety. Over time, frozen food may lose its texture, flavour, colour, or moisture. Ice crystals can form, and some foods may become dry or develop freezer burn. While this can affect the eating experience, it doesn't necessarily mean the food is unsafe.

Different foods keep their best quality for different lengths of time. Cooked meals, vegetables, meat, fish, and bread can all be frozen successfully, but they each have recommended storage times for the best taste and texture.

Personally, I love freezing leftovers because it helps reduce food waste and makes busy days much easier. It's always nice to have a healthy homemade meal ready whenever you need one.

A simple tip is to label your containers with the date before placing them in the freezer. That way, you'll always know what you have and can enjoy it while it's still at its best.

Do you often freeze your meals, or do you prefer cooking everything fresh?

Love, Shavida
